Onest (born Jason Gilchrist in 1984) is a hip-hop lyricist/freestyle artist from a section of Kansas City. Onest has gained popularity from his from his silver-tongue rhymes that get personal without being pretentious. Onest offers the listener a variety of musical styles all rolled into a blend of smooth tracks. His debut album, entitled Self Explanatory, was released on Nov 17, 2007. Self Explanatory offers melding elements of rap, rock, R&B, and funk into cohesive and melodic sounds, this native Kansan gives his brand of Midwest underground grit-hop a diverse appeal if only for his impressive lyrical dexterity.

Onests music is rooted in traditional hip-hop, Self Explanatory features a broad range of traditional instruments, furtive samples and gritty beats. His lyrics often socially conscious, also incorporate humor and wry perceptiveness that empowers his strengths that are evident on his debut album.

In addition to releasing Self Explanatory in 2007, Onest is currently gearing up for his follow-up album and to continue working with various projects in the Midwest underground hiphop scene.
